"Kanseng Krohorm" performed by Master Sok Duch on the khsae diew
Performed by Master Sok Duch on the khsae diew.
This ancient song is performed on a uniquely Khmer instrument called the khsae diew or khsae muoy, images of which are found on the walls of temples in Cambodia dating back to the 10th century. A single-stringed instrument with a gourd resonating chamber, the khsae diew is loved for its soft, soothing timbre. Even in the 20th century, Khmer kings and leaders would request solo performances of the khsae diew to calm their minds and relax their bodies. Master Sok Duch may be the last great master of this rare instrument, but thanks to CLA he now teaches khsae diew to a class of young musicians. He is happy to report that two of his young students show the potential to become future masters.
