Culture and Arts Education

In 2017, we are starting an exciting project to strengthen culture and arts education in Cambodia. We will work in partnership with the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MoEYS), and with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MoCFA) and UNESCO as partners on a 5-year project, starting with a pilot program at Sisowath High School in Phnom Penh.

The project aims to develop curious and creative young people, who engage with their society with a deep understanding of their own cultural context. It follows a year-long process of research and development, building on the successes of existing culture and arts programs between arts NGOs and public schools, including Bophana Center, Krousar Thmey, Phare Ponleu Selpak and Epic Arts.

The pilot project will test a model of delivering culture and arts education through “Cluster Arts Centers”.

The idea of the cluster arts center is that it serves multiple schools in a particular area, and fulfils the following functions:

  • Formal education, within the school curriculum
  • Non-formal education, outside of school hours
  • Arts programming, including festivals, demonstrations, workshops and competitions
  • Professional training for teachers and career advice for students
