Studio CLA
Through Studio CLA, Cambodian Living Arts documents and records the repertoire, skills, and techniques of some of Cambodia's greatest aging masters in order to preserve clear examples of these great masters' styles and variations for the next generation of musical performers.
Cambodian Living Arts began recording--with the help of great volunteer engineers from Canada and the USA--Khmer musicians in 1998 in commercial studios around Phnom Penh and in the countryside. In 2003, it established its own recording studio under the direction of ethnomusicologist Scot Stafford and other recording specialists.
In addition to developing an archive of traditional music, Studio CLA has also developed and recorded some contemporary fusion CDs which bring together Khmer traditional music with more modern styles. It also has developed a line of commercial quality CDs for sale throughout Cambodia, and profits from sales at authorized outlets will go to benefit both the program and the masters.
Recently, the studio has also branched into audio-visual documentary making, allowing it to preserve and document dance, shadow puppetry, and other program developments.
Studio CLA’s TV programs, sponsored in part by ANZ Royal Bank, will be broadcast with the release of a new CD produced by Studio CLA, featuring CLA’s most famous master, the traditional wedding singer Mr. Ieng Sithul.
