Transformation

CLA is delighted to celebrate the LIVING ARTS CAMPAIGN, a transformative capital campaign that has raised nearly $2.5 million in cash contributions and planned gifts from an incredible group of deeply committed, loyal donors—many of whom have been involved with the organization since the beginning.

We welcome you to join us for a month-long celebration of our campaign in April 2022, as we share performances that represent the past, present and future of CLA. Please see below for more details.

All contributions to the Living Arts Campaign will help grow our organization’s Vision Fund, which has supported CLA’s growth over the last 10 years into an organization that will remain sustainable for the long haul. Created in 2008 through a $1 million bequest from one of our longtime donors, the Vision Fund has historically been a reserve that our organization can borrow from. With this campaign, we will be able to inject the Vision Fund with working capital so that going forward, the fund will not only function as a reserve, but will also support strategic projects and programs that provide more opportunities for Cambodian artists and cultural practitioners in Cambodia and around the world.

On Wednesday, April 20, we will be hosting a special gathering for those who made contributions to our capital campaign, no matter how large or small.

The occasion will include a private screening of Jean-Baptiste Phou’s latest work, “My Mother’s Tongue,” created in collaboration with visual artist Sao Sreymao. This art film—combining narration, sound work, photo and digital drawing—deals with a complex relationship between a mother and her son who don’t share the same language.

We invite you to be a part of this exciting milestone for CLA and consider making a contribution. To make a cash donation, please donate online or by check to:

Where Elephants Weep

PLEASE NOTE: Where Elephants Weep will be streamed from April 21-28 via Broadway On Demand. Please check back here for more details closer to the date.

Where Elephants Weep, created by acclaimed Cambodian composer Him Sophy, is the first-ever work commissioned by CLA. The Cambodian opera, which premiered in 2007 in Lowell, MA, enabled CLA to step into the role of a catalyst and facilitator, and CLA’s tradition of commissioning new works to support Cambodian artists, reach new audiences, and shed light on societal challenges facing Cambodian communities at home and abroad.

Mohaosrop Silapak Khmer Amatak

This video slideshow comprises historical photos and audio from the Fourth Annual Mohaosrop Silapak Khmer Amatak, which brought together 330 master artists, students, and visiting artists and scholars to learn and share traditional art forms in August 2007. This festival exemplifies CLA’s mission during its first decade to document and transmit endangered traditional art forms from master to student.

Variations on Bangsokol (music) and Ritual (dance)

In response to the challenges and realities of 2020, CLA and Arts Emerson co-presented the 2020 Bangsokol Virtual Festival, a two-week series of online performances, film screenings, and conversations, inspired by the groundbreaking work that CLA commissioned, Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia. The program culminated with a new work created exclusively for the festival, “Variations on Bangsokol (music) and Ritual (dance).” The Festival brought together artists from six different countries who were all involved in the original creation of Bangsokol to reflect on the work’s universal themes of arts and healing during this time of conflict and pandemic.

The Pillar

Commissioned by CLA as part of the 2020 Cultural Season and created by emerging choreographer SOK Nalys, “The Pillar” is a contemporary dance that invites audiences to look at the precious relationship between Master and student. Realizing her destiny to become a dancer—thanks to an innate desire for dance and the tutelage of her beloved teacher—Nalys responds to profound grief after the loss of her teacher.

Dare to Dream

Created by award-winning filmmaker and inaugural scholarship alumnus NEANG Kavich, “Dare to Dream” commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Arn Chorn-Pond Living Arts Scholarship Program. CLA has awarded over 120 scholarships since the program was created in 2011, and the program has developed to offer not only financial support for study and professional development, but also an enrichment program that nurtures the talent, confidence and soft skills of scholarship students, so they can advance their careers in the arts and make a positive impact on Cambodian society.

Mother Nature

CLA continued its practice of commissioning new works from underrepresented voices for its 2022 Cultural Season. Among these works is “Mother Nature,” co-created by contemporary dance choreographer, Chumvan “Belle” Sodhachivy and Kuoy community leader and environmental activist, KHA Sros. Drawing from traditional Kuoy dance, classical Cambodian dance and contemporary Cambodian dance, “Mother Nature” invites audiences to consider the role of arts in advancing climate action and indigenous rights.
