Poetic drama “Trialogue”

“Trialogue” will be staged in the form of a poetic drama, which mostly expresses social realities, is educational, and has a beautiful sound. The artwork, titled Trialogue, explores the evolution of Cambodia from the rise of the Democratic Kampuchea regime until the present day through the roles and influences of key peoples. Why did the revolution target artists, intellectuals, and capitalists? How have they influenced the process of restoring Cambodia to the present day? The artwork titled “Trialogue” will reveal these answers.

MeDha Women Drummers

Medha is the first group of Womendrummers in Cambodia. Medha started in 2017 and we used to be under the control and assistance of Cambodia Living Art.The reflection of performing is the art of storytelling of how we struggle with of the society that thinks that women cannot play this heavy drum. We used this music instrument as a voice to change and show the potential as a women in society and artistic.

Red River

The female drum artists went through three periods of the COVID-19 era, reliving their life experiences, including struggle, confusion, shock, and disappointment, but finally succeeding it. The female drum faced the great obstacles of the COVID-19 era. Society forced all the female artists to separate and abandon their performances, for a living. But the voice of art made one woman brave enough to start again alone. What she didn’t know was that her enthusiasm inspired the entire group of women to stand up and fight again, making the female drumming group famous for their amazing performance.

The contemporary play Timeless Echoes: HEMAKCHEAT

The contemporary play Timeless Echoes: HEMAKCHEAT explores memory, life, and love within a historic building in the heart of Phnom Penh, journeying through a glorious past, a time of darkness, and a complex present. This exploration ultimately becomes a bridge, connecting all these stories with a hopeful reminder that the soul of art lives on.

Prom Vorleak

Prom Vorleak is an actress who is currently developing herself to become a stage director, with an interest in documentary theater—inspired by the works of American actress, playwright, and professor Anna Deavere Smith—a style that blurs the boundaries between theater, performance art, and advocacy. Informed by Khmer literature and literary criticism, Prom’s ongoing project, Our Value, explores the resilience and vulnerability of women’s bodies and their relationship to “law” and (in)justice.

The Tragedy of KAKEI

The Tragedy of KAKEI, a working title currently in the conceptualization phase, is an interdisciplinary performance project that explores the resilience and vulnerability of women’s bodies and their relationship to “law” and (in)justice. The project also aims to unearth the repressed voices of women in Khmer literature and to incorporate the contemporary voices, experiences, and stories of Cambodian women shared on social media. Informed by the famous 1815 Khmer literary work, Neang Kakey, by King Ang Doung, and the analysis of this novel by Vandy Kaon, the staging of The Tragedy of KAKEI will be realized by deploying the “walk and talk” storytelling technique (borrowed from playwright Aaron Sorkin, the technique is designed to create a sense of energy, urgency, and momentum) and by incorporating live-streaming (using cameras), projection (of movie clips, archives, and reels), dance, and music. The project seeks to “rewrite,” reconstruct, and retell Khmer literature that has been told from men’s perspectives (whether it is the king, the writer, or the narrator), turning the focus to women’s perspectives. As the term Kakei in Khmer became synonymous with female infidelity and the societal dangers faced by women who engage in adultery, The Tragedy of KAKEI is to challenge and complicate this long-held view by incorporating real-life voices and stories, creating a unique theatrical adventure and experience that sparks dialog and conversation.
